Scholarships and Awards

Several scholarships and prizes are available to undergraduate students from the Deans office, the Office of National Scholarships and the Office of Undergraduate Research.

The English Department offers the following scholarships.

The Dave Sheehan '64 Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an English Department major who has an interest in the English language.

The Kathleen Gibson McPeek Scholarship in English will be awarded to a student majoring in English.

Recipients of these scholarships are chosen by a scholarship committee within the Department. There are no applications.

In addition, several writing awards and prizes are available.

Academic Integrity Essay Contest 

All UConn undergraduates are eligible to apply, and the judging committee will include members of the Committee for Undergraduate Writing and Instruction (CUWI). The awards will be: 

First Place $300 
Second Place $100

Deadline: December 1, 2008

Eligible essays are original pieces of argumentative or personal prose 
not exceeding 20 pages in length that examine any aspect of academic 
integrity. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

-Analysis of a case of plagiarism or improper citation in the academic 
or corporate world 
-The history of academic integrity as a concept 
-Global and cross-cultural ramifications of academic integrity 
-The impact of technology on questions of academic integrity 
-Plagiarism-detection software 
-Procedures around preventing, detecting, and/or punishing academic 
dishonesty 

Obviously, all essays must include proper citation of sources. 
Any standard citation style (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) is acceptable.

Applications should be submitted in a manila envelope with the prize name clearly written on the outside. Submit four copies of your essay. Each packet should be collated and stapled separately. Include one cover sheet attached to the top packet listing your name, title of work submitted, campus address, campus phone, student ID number, e-mail address, and semester standing. Your student ID number should appear on every page of the packet, but your name should not appear on the work itself.
