- Available at Storrs campus only:
Publishing (English 294C) is designed for upper level
students interested in career possibilities in writing and editing, in
short, writing for money. Students will be asked to analyze the
various formats common in public relations and journalism like the public
relations release, the interview, and the news story, and to write samples
of each. We will use the computer lab for an introduction to PageMaker
and to HTML and Web Publishing. In addition, we will examine the
availability of jobs in the industry and study the structure of and changes
in both book and magazine publishing. The course will rely heavily
on student participation and will be writing intensive. Supplemental
information on types of jobs, preparation required, and employment possibilities
will be provided by guest speakers.
Publishing (294C) provides good preparation for internships in business,
publishing, public relations, or journalism. We will learn
PageMaker - some Journalism courses teach Quark - both programs are useful.
Besides Journalism courses, other useful offerings are English 242 (The
English Language), English 244 (The History of the English
Language), or English 296 (Grammar).
Students can also work at (or volunteer at) The
Daily Campus, where they can gain valuable experience in editing
and page layout.
